Materuni Waterfalls & Coffee Experience

Discover the natural beauty and rich culture of the Chagga people with a full-day adventure to Materuni, an authentic village nestled on the outskirts of Kilimanjaro National Park—just a 45-minute drive from Moshi. Set on the lush slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro, Materuni offers a perfect blend of nature, tradition, and hands-on experience.

Tour Itinerary:

Morning Pick-Up & Scenic Drive
Your day begins around 9:00 AM when your guide and driver meet you in Moshi for the short but scenic drive to Materuni village. Upon arrival, you’ll register at the village office before setting off on your journey.

Hike to Materuni Waterfalls
Your adventure kicks off with a 45-minute guided hike through beautiful, green landscapes along narrow trails. If the weather is clear, you might catch a glimpse of Mount Kilimanjaro peeking through the clouds. Along the way, your guide will introduce you to the customs and way of life of the Chagga people.

The reward at the end of the trail? The stunning Materuni Waterfall, cascading down 90 meters into a refreshing natural pool. Take a break, soak in the views, and if you’re feeling adventurous, take a dip in the chilly mountain waters.

Coffee-Making Experience – Chagga Style
After hiking back to the village along a slightly different route, it’s time to immerse yourself in a truly local tradition: coffee-making from bean to cup. Learn how the Chagga grow, harvest, dry, and roast their beans—and then do it yourself! As you pound, grind, and brew your own cup, enjoy the joyful atmosphere as locals sing and dance around you.

Traditional Chagga Lunch
To wrap up your cultural immersion, sit down for a hearty homemade lunch prepared by local women. Taste authentic Chagga dishes like banana stew, pilau, or rice with beans—comforting and flavorful after your active morning.

Return to Moshi
With full bellies and memories to last a lifetime, you’ll hop back in the vehicle for the return journey to Moshi.
