Kikuletwa Hot Springs Daytrip

Kikuletwa (Chemka) Hot Springs Day Trip – A Hidden Oasis Near Moshi & Arusha

Escape the everyday and dive into one of Tanzania’s most unexpected gems Kikuletwa Hot Springs, also known as Chemka or Maji Moto. Tucked away in the countryside between Moshi and Arusha, this lush natural spring is a little paradise surrounded by palm and fig trees, with clear turquoise water that’s perfect for swimming, relaxing, and soaking up the serene vibes.

But it’s not just the destination that’s magical—the journey there is just as unforgettable. Depending on the season, you’ll drive through fields bursting with blooming sunflowers (May–June), or vibrant red flowers and sugarcane fields near the TPC plantation towards the end of the year. And on clear days, Mount Kilimanjaro makes a breathtaking appearance along the way.

Itinerary:

Morning Departure
We’ll pick you up from your accommodation in Moshi around 10:00 AM for a scenic 1.5-hour drive through the Tanzanian countryside. The route includes both paved and dirt roads, passing through local villages, dry riverbeds, baobab and acacia trees, and even some old railway tracks. You might spot Maasai herders along the way, adding to the authenticity of the experience.

Arrival at Kikuletwa Hot Springs
Once we arrive, the time is yours to enjoy however you like. Despite the name, the water isn’t hot but it’s incredibly refreshing! The spring is fed by underground streams from Mount Kilimanjaro, giving it a constant flow of crystal-clear, slightly warm water.

Here’s what you can do:

  • Swim or float in the cool, clear water surrounded by nature

  • Watch local kids showing off their rope-swing acrobatics

  • Explore the surroundings or simply relax in the shade

  • Grab a bite from local vendors—try chips mayai (a local omelet with fries) or chips kuku (fried chicken and chips) for a tasty treat

Afternoon Return
Around 4:00 PM, we’ll head back to Moshi, giving you more chances to soak in the scenic beauty along the return route.

Perfect For:
Anyone looking to unwind, take a dip, and enjoy a laid-back day in nature—without hiking boots or altitude training!
