MARANGU WATERFALLS & CHAGGA DAY TRIP
Overview
Nestled on the lush slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro, Marangu Waterfall offers a scenic and refreshing escape. Reaching the waterfall involves a gentle 45-minute hike through verdant forest trails. At the base of the waterfall, there’s an inviting natural pool where you can take a dip—if you’re brave enough to handle the crisp, cold mountain water!
The Chagga people, who inhabit the southern slopes of Kilimanjaro, have a rich cultural heritage. After visiting the waterfall, you’ll explore the historic Chagga caves—ingenious underground shelters built during their conflicts with the Maasai tribe. Walking through these hand-dug passages gives a fascinating glimpse into the resilience and resourcefulness of the Chagga. To complete the experience, you’ll enjoy a traditional Chagga meal, including the chance to sample “mbege,” a unique banana beer made locally.
Itinerary
Your cultural adventure begins in the morning when your guide picks you up from your hotel in Moshi. From there, it’s about a one-hour drive to Marangu village. The day is filled with immersive activities that showcase the natural beauty and cultural depth of the region:
-
Marangu Waterfall – Take a scenic hike and cool off in the refreshing mountain waters while soaking in panoramic views of the surrounding valleys.
-
Chagga Museum – Discover the traditions, tools, and lifestyle of the Chagga people, including a visit to a reconstructed traditional thatched house.
-
Underground Chagga Tunnels – Walk through these historic tunnels once used for protection during tribal wars.
-
Colorful Local Markets – Explore one of Tanzania’s largest banana markets, a vibrant hub for local trade and culture.
-
Coffee and Banana Farms – Visit local farms and homes where you’ll learn how coffee is grown, harvested, and traditionally prepared—right from bean to cup.
-
Local Bar Experience – Wrap up your tour at a local Chagga bar with a taste of “mbege,” the region’s famous millet and banana brew.

It was 100% super amazing Hiking Kilimanjaro was a bucket list day trip and I was in good hands with chance venture tours. It was 100% the right choice. I’m a south Africa, traveled with a friends. We had solo hikers, couples, and 2 kids, friends in our group of 4.The group camaraderie was priceless. Chance venture tours are true professionals. I felt safe and supported the entire time, plus very well fed with tasty food and I can be a food snob sometimes too. They pick you up from airport, select a great hotel, help with any local excursions, check your gear- have gear you can rent if needed, daily medical checks on the mountain, morning wake ups w coffee or tea, snacks and hot tea during hikes. Kindly reccomended you chance venture tours for the nextadventure of your life time you wont regret to choose them! Manuela2024-10-07Verified A dream came true In September we climbed Kilimanjaro on the 7-day Lemosho route with Chance Venture Tours and we had an unforgettable time! Our guide Goodchance supported us at all times, motivated us with different songs and always took care of our health and well-being. He taught us a lot about the mountain, the landscape and the vegetation. We can now also speak a few words in Swahili. :-) We had a lot of laughs and unforgettable moments with the whole team, for which we are very grateful. The food was always fresh and lovingly prepared. It always tasted delicious. Many thanks to our chef Mokozi! Climbing Uhuru Peak was a dream come true. We reached the summit just in time for sunrise and were able to experience a wonderful morning atmosphere. A big thank you to our porters, Emmanuel, Calvin, Daniel, Gift, Elinami, Jemsi and Anolrd, who worked incredibly hard to support us. We will always remember this amazing week with these lovely people and thank them from the bottom of our hearts for everything. Keep up your positive attitude to life! Hakuna Matata!
