Mount Kilimanjaro Climb via Umbwe Route
6 Days Umbwe Route
Overview
Umbwe is for daring and experienced climbers seeking a real challenge. This short, steep climb traverses all the climate zones—from tropical rainforests to eternal ice—pushing your strength and endurance to the limit. Unlike other routes on Kilimanjaro, Umbwe offers a deep sense of achievement for those who reach the summit.
Your first day on the mountain begins at Umbwe Gate and takes you on a long trek to Umbwe Camp, the first stop along the way. Despite the difficulty of the Umbwe route, the carefully placed camps ensure proper acclimatization.
The Umbwe trail is available only as a 6-day program and is best suited for experienced hikers in good physical condition due to its high level of difficulty.
Why Choose the 6 Days Ubwe Route?
The 6-Day Umbwe Route is one of the most challenging and adventurous ways to climb Mount Kilimanjaro, making it ideal for experienced trekkers looking for a more demanding ascent. Known for its steep trails and dramatic scenery, Umbwe offers a true wilderness experience away from the more established routes.
The trek begins through dense rainforest before entering steep ridges, moorland, and high-altitude landscapes. As the route joins the Southern Circuit, climbers experience highlights such as Barranco Wall, Karanga Valley, and the dramatic views of Kibo Peak on the approach to Uhuru Peak.
With a six-day itinerary, the Umbwe Route requires good fitness, determination, and preparation. Supported by experienced local guides and a professional mountain crew, it offers an exciting and rewarding challenge for climbers ready to take on one of Kilimanjaro’s toughest routes.
Detailed Itinerary
Arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport
Upon arrival at the airport, you’ll be picked up and transferred to your hotel in Moshi. Later, your guide will meet you to brief you about the trek and perform an equipment check to ensure you have all the necessary gear.
Day 1 – Umbwe Gate (1800m) to Umbwe Cave Camp (2850m)
Distance covered: 11 km
Approximate time taken: 7 hours
Habitat: Rainforest
Meals: Breakfast, lunch, and dinner included
Your guide and climbing support crew will arrive at your hotel in the morning. After final introductions and an equipment check, you will be driven to the Umbwe Gate at 1,800m/5905ft, where your trek will begin. After the final registration process, you will start the long climb to Umbwe Camp at 2,850m/9350ft. The climb through the rainforest is demanding, and the altitude increase is significant. Take your time, find a steady pace, and don’t rush. Be prepared for rain, and don’t forget your rain gear! Your support team will have the camp ready by the time you arrive.
Day 2 – Umbwe Cave Camp (2850m) to Barranco Camp (3900m)
Distance covered: 8 km
Approximate time taken: 5 hours
Habitat: Moorland
Meals: Breakfast, lunch, and dinner included
After an early breakfast, you’ll continue your trek to Barranco Camp. The rainforest quickly transitions to moorland, and on clear days, you’ll have the chance to spot Mount Meru in the distance. This day’s trek is moderate, and by lunchtime, you will reach Barranco Camp at 3,900m/12795ft. Nestled in a volcanic fault, this camp offers spectacular views. After lunch, you’ll have the rest of the day to relax and aid in the acclimatization process.
Day 3 – Barranco Camp (3900m) to Karanga Camp (4000m)
Distance covered: 6 km
Approximate time taken: 4 hours
Habitat: Alpine desert
Meals: Breakfast, lunch, and dinner included
Another early start follows a hearty breakfast. The day begins with the famous Barranco Wall, a steep but short climb that takes about an hour to complete. After reaching the top, you can enjoy a break and take some photos with Kibo in the background. From here, the trek becomes more challenging as you ascend and descend several smaller hills on the way to Karanga Camp. The day’s hike is physically demanding, but your guide will help manage the pace. Once you reach the camp, you’ll have lunch and a couple of hours to rest. In the afternoon, you’ll go on a short acclimatization hike, gaining about 200 meters in altitude toward Barafu Camp, before descending back to Karanga Camp for the night.
Day 4 – Karanga Camp (4000m) to Barafu Camp (4640m)
Distance covered: 4 km
Approximate time taken: 3 hours
Habitat: Alpine desert
Meals: Breakfast, lunch, and dinner included
On this day, you will ascend from Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp (4640m). Barafu is the base camp for the summit attempt, and the route takes you through an alpine desert with a few rocky sections. Upon arrival at Barafu Camp, you’ll have lunch and a brief rest. This is the final stop before the push to the summit, so ensure you’re well-rested and prepared for the climb.
Day 5 – Barafu Camp (4637m) to Uhuru Peak (5895m) then down to Millennium Camp (3950m)
Distance covered: 15 km
Approximate time taken: 12-15 hours
Habitat: Glacier/Moorland
Meals: Breakfast, lunch, and dinner included
An early start, around midnight, marks the beginning of your summit day. You will climb scree and rocks, gaining significant elevation over a short distance. After about 4-5 hours, you will reach Stella Point on the crater rim (5756m), where the first rays of the sun will greet you. From there, it’s another hour to Uhuru Peak (5895m), the highest point in Africa. Take time to enjoy the incredible views and snap some photos at the summit. Afterward, the descent begins. You’ll return to Barafu Camp for lunch and a short rest before continuing down to Millennium Camp (3950m) for the night.
Day 6 – Millennium Camp (3950m) to Mweka Gate (1630m)
Distance covered: 14 km
Approximate time taken: 6 hours
Habitat: Moorland/Rainforest
Meals: Breakfast and lunch included
After breakfast, you’ll begin your final descent from Millennium Camp to Mweka Gate. The descent takes several hours, passing through both moorland and rainforest. Upon arrival at the gate, you’ll receive your climbing certificate. After completing park formalities, you’ll be transferred back to your hotel in Moshi for a warm shower and celebration.
Then – Depart Tanzania / Other Destinations in Tanzania
In the evening or the following day, you’ll be transferred to Kilimanjaro International Airport for your return flight. If you’d like, we can also arrange an affordable safari to one of Tanzania’s best wildlife parks, such as Tarangire National Park, Ngorongoro Crater, or Serengeti National Park.

It was 100% super amazing Hiking Kilimanjaro was a bucket list day trip and I was in good hands with chance venture tours. It was 100% the right choice. I’m a south Africa, traveled with a friends. We had solo hikers, couples, and 2 kids, friends in our group of 4.The group camaraderie was priceless. Chance venture tours are true professionals. I felt safe and supported the entire time, plus very well fed with tasty food and I can be a food snob sometimes too. They pick you up from airport, select a great hotel, help with any local excursions, check your gear- have gear you can rent if needed, daily medical checks on the mountain, morning wake ups w coffee or tea, snacks and hot tea during hikes. Kindly reccomended you chance venture tours for the nextadventure of your life time you wont regret to choose them!Posted on Tripadvisor![]()

A dream came true In September we climbed Kilimanjaro on the 7-day Lemosho route with Chance Venture Tours and we had an unforgettable time! Our guide Goodchance supported us at all times, motivated us with different songs and always took care of our health and well-being. He taught us a lot about the mountain, the landscape and the vegetation. We can now also speak a few words in Swahili. :-) We had a lot of laughs and unforgettable moments with the whole team, for which we are very grateful. The food was always fresh and lovingly prepared. It always tasted delicious. Many thanks to our chef Mokozi! Climbing Uhuru Peak was a dream come true. We reached the summit just in time for sunrise and were able to experience a wonderful morning atmosphere. A big thank you to our porters, Emmanuel, Calvin, Daniel, Gift, Elinami, Jemsi and Anolrd, who worked incredibly hard to support us. We will always remember this amazing week with these lovely people and thank them from the bottom of our hearts for everything. Keep up your positive attitude to life! Hakuna Matata! We can absolutely recommend this company for your Kilimanjaro adventure!Posted on Tripadvisor![]()
