Overview

The Machame Route, often referred to as “the Whiskey Route,” is the second most popular trail on Mount Kilimanjaro. It offers a diverse range of stunning views, landscapes, and experiences. Starting at Machame Gate on the southern slope of the mountain, the path takes you on an exhilarating journey through various climate zones. You’ll begin in the lush tropical rainforest and gradually ascend through different ecosystems, ultimately reaching the Arctic desert at the summit.

The route’s camps are strategically located to ensure a smooth and gradual acclimatization process. On the third day, the Machame Route intersects with the Lemosho and Umbwe routes at Barranco Camp.

Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport, you’ll be greeted and transferred to your hotel in Moshi. Later, your guide will meet with you to provide a briefing about the trek and conduct an equipment check to ensure you have all the necessary gear for the climb.

Why Choose the 7 Days Machame Route?

The 7-Day Machame Route is an excellent choice for climbers seeking a scenic, challenging, and well-paced journey to Mount Kilimanjaro’s Uhuru Peak (5,895m). Known as the “Whiskey Route,” Machame combines adventurous trails with stunning scenery and a carefully planned pace for better acclimatization.

The trek begins through the lush rainforest before opening into the moorland and alpine desert zones. Along the way, you’ll enjoy spectacular views of Kilimanjaro and experience highlights such as the Shira Plateau, Lava Tower, Barranco Wall, and Karanga Valley.

With seven days on the mountain, the itinerary allows more time to adjust to the altitude while following the “climb high, sleep low” approach. Supported by experienced local guides and a professional mountain crew, the 7-Day Machame Route offers an exciting and rewarding way to experience Kilimanjaro.

Detailed Itinerary

After breakfast, you will be picked up from your hotel around 8:00 am and transferred to Machame Gate. Along the way, you’ll pass through lush coffee and banana plantations cultivated by the Chagga people. Upon arrival at Machame Gate, you’ll complete park formalities before starting your climb. The trek today takes you through the tropical rainforest to Machame Camp (2835m). You’ll stop for a picnic lunch during the hike. Overnight at Machame Camp.

After a hearty breakfast, you’ll begin the hike at 8:00 am. The first hour takes you through the forest, then you’ll move onto the moorland zone with a gentler climb. Distance covered: 10 km

Today, we aim for acclimatization by hiking to a higher altitude before descending again. You’ll trek through the alpine desert to Lava Tower (4600m), then descend to Barranco Camp (3900m). Hiking Kilimanjaro was a bucket list trip and I was in good hands with chance venture tours. It was 100% super amazing Hiking Kilimanjaro was a bucket list day trip and I was in good hands with chance venture tours. It was 100% the right choice. I’m a south Africa, traveled with a friends. We had solo hikers, couples, and 2 kids, friends in our group of 4.The group camaraderie was priceless. Chance venture tours are true professionals. I felt safe and supported the entire time, plus very well fed with tasty food and I can be a food snob sometimes too. They pick you up from airport, select a great hotel, help with any local excursions, check your gear- have gear you can rent if needed, daily medical checks on the mountain, morning wake ups w coffee or tea, snacks and hot tea during hikes. Kindly reccomended you chance venture tours for the nextadventure of your life time you wont regret to choose them!

A dream came true In September we climbed Kilimanjaro on the 7-day Lemosho route with Chance Venture Tours and we had an unforgettable time! Our guide Goodchance supported us at all times, motivated us with different songs and always took care of our health and well-being. He taught us a lot about the mountain, the landscape and the vegetation. We can now also speak a few words in Swahili. :-) We had a lot of laughs and unforgettable moments with the whole team, for which we are very grateful. The food was always fresh and lovingly prepared. It always tasted delicious. Many thanks to our chef Mokozi! Climbing Uhuru Peak was a dream come true. We reached the summit just in time for sunrise and were able to experience a wonderful morning atmosphere. A big thank you to our porters, Emmanuel, Calvin, Daniel, Gift, Elinami, Jemsi and Anolrd, who worked incredibly hard to support us. We will always remember this amazing week with these lovely people and thank them from the bottom of our hearts for everything. Keep up your positive attitude to life! Hakuna Matata! We can absolutely recommend this company for your Kilimanjaro adventure!
